Spring greens

There are little rituals and moments that every family celebrates throughout the year. One time for us is the arrival of the first sweet baby broad beans. Sitting on the outside steps of every house we have lived in, we enjoy that seasonal time of shelling the fresh green pods with their velvet interiors (a glass of white wine for the adults doesn’t go amiss…) and chatting together. If you pick the beans before they get too large, they are as sweet and delicious as peas, easily enjoyed by tossing them with some olive oil, salt and pepper. This year the children decided to get creative and use our homemade sourdough pizza bases and then decorate with the freshly harvested beans, herbs and pesto … one decided that rosemary flowers would be a good touch too.  That’s spring in a pod to me.
