cottage extension

Many an extension has been done to a heritage house, the argument is always whether to compliment or contrast with the existing form. In this project, the architects Messana O’Rorke tried both approaches, but it was agreed by the client and the architect that the contrasting method proved most successful. Here the existing simple 1700’s Dutch cottage is contrasted against another simple rectilinear form clad in corten steel (which will weather to match the existing house). The simplicity of the existing house is retained and a clarity between new and old allows both to balance each other. The materials on the inside are consistent, old timber boards were sourced to match the existing cottage, and the white render allows both spaces to flow together beautifully. (Their dogs are pretty cute too….our terrier wishes she was allowed on the bed as well….)
