The use of pure white walls as a backdrop to beautiful furniture can look a little intimidating to some (especially those with kids who envisage the high maintenance factor), however it can be anything but. This pragmatic style relies on a simplicity of form, but also a richness of texture – something that, when young families are building on a budget, is very appealing and achievable. Even a few toys on the floor, or a stack of books in this environment take on a quality of ‘art’ rather than ‘mess’.

While its primary function may have been to reflect as much light as possible in dark northern winters – in the southern hemisphere, with the right tone of white, it has the potential to enlarge small spaces and simplify busy lives.
